Most asked questions about solar in BC
Cost & Savings

Solar payback periods in BC typically range from 8 to 10 years for residential systems with the BC Hydro rebate applied. After payback, you essentially get free electricity for the remaining 15–20+ years of your system's life.

Sunny BC regions like the Okanagan, Kamloops, and the Southern Interior tend toward 7–9 year payback periods thanks to higher solar production. Coastal regions like Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, and Vancouver Island land closer to 9–10 years due to more cloud cover — but still produce more electricity annually than most people expect. For commercial properties, the federal 30% Clean Technology ITC can cut commercial payback to 4–6 years.

Cost & Savings

Yes. MAG Solar offers $0-down solar financing across BC through partners like Financeit and the Vancity Planet-Wise Renovation Loan (up to $50,000 at competitive low rates for BC homeowners). Terms typically run 10–15 years, and your monthly loan payment is often less than the BC Hydro bill you're replacing.

This means most homeowners in Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Langley, Mission, Kelowna, and across BC are cash-flow positive from day one — saving on electricity while paying off the system. No money down, no upfront fees, no surprises. See how our installations work →

Cost & Savings

A properly sized solar system in BC can eliminate 70–100% of your BC Hydro bill, depending on your roof orientation and consumption. Over the 25-year lifetime of a system, BC homeowners typically save $40,000–$70,000+ on electricity costs.

Solar also hedges against rising BC Hydro rates — which have increased steadily over the past decade. Lock in your electricity cost now and stop worrying about future rate hikes. One of our Lower Mainland customers, Leanne, said: "we love getting Hydro bills that are only $18 a month" — and she charges her EV at home too.

BC Rebates

HPCN stands for Home Performance Contractor Network — BC Hydro's certification program for qualified solar installers. As of June 1, 2026, your installer must be an HPCN member for your project to qualify for BC Hydro solar rebates.

HPCN members have completed BC Hydro's training program, are in good standing with WorkSafeBC, carry full liability insurance, hold valid business licenses, and offer standard warranties. MAG Solar maintains HPCN compliance — so when you choose us, your BC Hydro rebate is fully protected. If you're being quoted by a non-HPCN installer after June 2026, you'll lose access to the rebate entirely. Contact MAG to confirm HPCN coverage in your area →

BC Rebates

Yes — the BC Hydro solar rebate can be combined (stacked) with other incentives where eligible. Common stackable programs include:

Federal Clean Technology ITC (commercial only): 30% refundable tax credit for businesses installing solar. See our CT-ITC guide → | CRA's official CT-ITC page →

Vancity Planet-Wise Renovation Loan: Low-interest BC-only financing of up to $50,000 with terms up to 15 years.

Municipal PACE programs: Some BC municipalities offer property-assessed clean energy financing.

BC PST exemption: Solar equipment is generally exempt from BC's Provincial Sales Tax, saving you another 7% upfront. MAG handles the paperwork for every rebate and incentive you qualify for — no extra cost. See our complete solar incentives guide →

BC Rebates

For residential homeowners in BC, the previous Canada Greener Homes Grant has been closed — but the Canada Greener Homes Loan (interest-free up to $40,000) remained available as of recent updates. Always confirm current status when applying.

For businesses, farms, and commercial properties in BC, the federal Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (CT-ITC) offers a 30% refundable tax credit on solar and battery equipment through December 31, 2033. This is one of the most generous commercial solar incentives in Canadian history. See commercial incentives → | Explore commercial solar →

Vancity & Financing

Yes — VCIB (Vancity Community Investment Bank) is one of the strongest commercial solar lenders in Canada. As the only B Corp Schedule 1 chartered bank in Canada, VCIB specializes in clean energy financing for small-to-mid-size renewable energy projects — making it a natural fit for BC businesses, non-profits, farms, and stratas going solar.

VCIB Commercial Solar Loan features:

Loan size: $2M – $10M for equipment financing

Up to 90% financing of equipment, installation, and engineering costs

Rates: 4.5% – 7.5% based on business financials and project size

Up to 5-year fixed interest rate, amortizations up to 10 years

4-week approval guaranteed if your installer is in their Solar Installer Partner Program

VCIB has supported the development of thousands of clean energy projects across Canada. For BC commercial solar projects, VCIB financing pairs powerfully with the federal 30% Clean Technology ITC — meaning your effective out-of-pocket cost can drop dramatically. MAG Solar is experienced working with VCIB-financed commercial projects. Explore our commercial solar services →

BC Hydro

As of July 1, 2026, BC Hydro is closing Rate Schedule 1289 (1:1 net metering) to new customers and moving to Rate Schedule 2289, the new Self-Generation Rate.

Under the new rate, you'll still consume your own solar electricity directly (no rate change for that), but any excess electricity you export to the grid will be credited at approximately 10¢/kWh instead of the full retail rate. This is why battery storage is increasingly important in BC — batteries let you store your own production for use later, rather than exporting it at the lower rate. MAG sizes every system with the new rate structure in mind, often pairing solar with battery storage to maximize self-consumption. See our battery and inverter products →

BC Hydro

Yes — pre-approval is mandatory. Your solar installer must submit a self-generation application to BC Hydro before you purchase any equipment. BC Hydro reviews the proposed system, checks grid capacity in your area, and either approves or requests modifications.

This step is critical: if you skip it and install before approval, your system won't qualify for rebates and may not be allowed to connect to the grid. MAG Solar handles the entire BC Hydro application process for every customer in our service area — from initial paperwork through final interconnection approval. You don't lift a finger. See our complete BC installation guide →

BC Hydro

Yes. FortisBC also offers net metering for residential and commercial customers in their service territory — primarily in the Okanagan, Kootenays, and South Interior of BC. The program works similarly to BC Hydro's: you generate solar, use what you need, and earn credits for any excess sent back to the grid.

FortisBC service areas include Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Trail, Nelson, Castlegar, Cranbrook, and parts of the Okanagan Valley. MAG Solar works with both BC Hydro and FortisBC interconnection processes, depending on which utility serves your property. If you're in the Okanagan or Kootenays, we'll handle your FortisBC application as part of your install.

Installation

Solar installations in BC typically require:

Electrical permit — issued by Technical Safety BC, mandatory for every solar install.

Building permit — required by most BC municipalities (Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Mission, Abbotsford, Kelowna, Victoria, etc.). Some smaller municipalities may not require one for residential rooftop solar.

BC Hydro self-generation application — mandatory grid interconnection approval.

Strata approval — if you live in a strata property, you'll need written approval from your strata council before installation.

MAG Solar pulls all permits and manages every inspection so you don't have to. We work daily with permitting departments across BC.

Installation

Most BC roofs are great candidates for solar. The ideal setup is a south, southwest, or southeast-facing roof with minimal shading from trees and neighboring buildings. Tile, metal, asphalt shingle, and standing-seam roofs are all compatible with modern solar mounting systems.

Older BC homes with cedar shake roofs require special considerations — we can advise during your site assessment. If your roof has 15+ years of life left, you can install solar directly. If your roof is aging, MAG can replace the roof and install solar as a combined project (we're licensed roofers AND solar installers, which saves you money on labour and prevents future removal/reinstall costs). Learn how solar affects your BC home insurance →

Installation

Yes. Solar installations in BC must comply with the BC Building Code, Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), and applicable municipal bylaws. Key requirements include proper wind and snow load engineering for the racking system, certified electrical components (CSA-approved), and licensed electrician installation of all electrical work.

BC's seismic code also affects solar mounting in earthquake-prone areas (which is most of southwestern BC). MAG Solar designs every system to current BC building code standards, with structural engineering review when required. All our electrical work is done by Red Seal certified electricians registered in BC through Technical Safety BC.

Installation

Yes, but it requires strata approval. In BC, individual unit owners typically can't install solar on common property without strata council approval — but multi-family solar installations are increasingly common and BC Hydro now offers rebates specifically for strata properties.

For townhouses or row homes where you own the roof, the process is simpler — though you may still need to notify the strata. MAG Solar has experience working with stratas across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, including helping councils evaluate proposals and present to owners. Multi-family solar projects in BC are eligible for up to $10,000 in solar rebates plus up to $10,000 for battery storage per building. See BC Hydro's strata-specific rebate program →

BC Climate

Solar panels actually perform more efficiently in cold weather — the technology converts light to electricity, and cooler panel temperatures improve efficiency. So a sunny cold winter day in BC can produce more electricity per hour than a hot summer day.

Snow is rarely a problem in most of BC. In the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island, snow accumulation on panels is uncommon and typically melts/slides off within a day or two. In snowier regions like the Interior, Kootenays, and northern BC, panels are tilted at angles that encourage natural shedding. Total winter production drops due to shorter days, but BC's net metering bank covers winter from summer credits — meaning your annual electricity bill can still be near zero even with winter snow.

BC Climate

Surprisingly yes. While Vancouver is famous for its grey winters, the Lower Mainland gets a solar-productive 1,938 hours of sunshine annually (per Environment Canada). That's actually more sunlight than parts of Germany, which is one of the world's largest solar markets per capita.

Vancouver-area solar systems typically produce 950–1,100 kWh per kW installed per year — enough that a well-designed 7–10 kW system covers most of a Vancouver home's electricity consumption. With the new BC Hydro solar + battery rebate, even cloudy Vancouver makes economic sense for solar.

BC Climate

The sunniest solar-producing regions in BC are:

Okanagan Valley (Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Osoyoos) — BC's solar leader, with 2,000+ annual sunlight hours and excellent winter production.

Kamloops & Thompson region — high sunshine, dry summers, great solar output.

Kootenays (Nelson, Cranbrook, Castlegar) — strong solar production despite mountainous terrain.

Cariboo & North — variable but often surprisingly good summer production.

Lower Mainland & Vancouver Island — lower annual hours but still very viable, especially with battery storage.

MAG Solar designs systems specifically for your microclimate in BC — we don't use a one-size-fits-all approach. See how we customize residential systems →

Service Areas

Yes — Vancouver and the Lower Mainland are MAG Solar's largest service area. We install solar panels across Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Langley, Delta, White Rock, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, New Westminster, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Mission, Abbotsford, and Chilliwack.

Our installation crews are based in Mission, BC, and travel daily across the Lower Mainland. Most of our 500+ BC residential installs are in this region. Local familiarity with City of Vancouver permits, Metro Vancouver electrical requirements, and Surrey municipal solar approvals means faster project timelines for you.

Service Areas

Yes. MAG Solar serves Vancouver Island including Victoria, Saanich, Sidney, Langford, Colwood, Sooke, Duncan, Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Courtenay, Comox, and Campbell River.

Vancouver Island is an excellent solar region — slightly higher sunshine hours than mainland Vancouver, combined with strong BC Hydro infrastructure. Island installations involve crew travel and ferry coordination, but we've streamlined the process to keep costs and timelines comparable to mainland projects.

Service Areas

Yes. MAG Solar regularly installs solar panels in Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, Lake Country, Peachland, Summerland, Penticton, Naramata, Osoyoos, and Oliver. The Okanagan is one of BC's strongest solar regions — sunny summers, cold sunny winters, and excellent year-round solar production.

Most Okanagan customers are FortisBC service area, which has its own net metering program (similar to BC Hydro's). MAG handles FortisBC interconnection applications and ensures every Okanagan install meets local building requirements. Solar payback in the Okanagan tends to run 7–9 years thanks to higher sunshine.

About MAG

Yes — MAG Solar maintains BC Hydro HPCN (Home Performance Contractor Network) membership, which is required as of June 1, 2026 for BC Hydro solar rebate eligibility. This means choosing MAG protects your access to up to $20,000 in BC Hydro rebates ($10K solar + $10K battery).

HPCN status requires ongoing compliance with WorkSafeBC, valid BC business licensing, full liability insurance, and standard product warranties. We carry all of these and pass annual program audits. If a BC solar installer can't confirm HPCN status, ask why — your rebate depends on it. Contact MAG to verify our credentials →
